Pouliquen Lauds Giant-Killers Metz

Lyon may not have been quite at full strength as they were beaten by Ligue 2 club Metz in the Stade Gerland but Yvon Pouliquen, head coach of the relative minnows, has refused to allow that to dampen his enthusiasm. The wonderful 3-1 success takes his side into the quarter-finals of the Coupe de la Ligue.

“Lyon is still Lyon,” he told to l’Equipe, “[Karim] Benzema, [Jérémy] Toulalan and [Hugo] Lloris were missing, but they still had Frédéric Piquionne as well as others.”

As with any side going to the Stade Gerland, Metz spent large periods of the game without the ball, but were well organised defensively and incisive in front of goal, allowing les Grenats to counter-attack effectively.

A Victory Mendy goal was quickly doubled by Sébastien Renouard in the first half, before Cris pulled a goal back for Lyon early in the second period. Having withstood some serious pressure from the hosts, Romain Rocchi made the game safe as he pounced on a defensive error to score with a simple finish.

“Bravo! My team played an exceptional game,” Pouliquen enthused, “We have scored three goals and, if Lyon have been less successful than they often are, it is because we have given them less space.

“We played well and did not panic. We faced up to them and always tried to move forward. “

Metz will now focus on their more mundane task of trying to win promotion to Ligue 1 after relegation last season. The Lorraine club are currently positioned fourth in the second flight, having failed to win either of their previous two fixtures.

Comolli makes St Etienne return

Former Tottenham sporting director Damien Comolli has been appointed technical director of struggling French Ligue One club St Etienne.

Comolli was St Etienne's technical director from 2004 to 2005 before he moved to White Hart Lane.

He was sacked, along with Spurs manager Juande Ramos, last month following the club's disastrous start to the season.

On Monday coach Laurent Roussey was fired, with the club in the bottom three after five straight defeats.

St Etienne lost 3-0 at home to Rennes on Sunday and the 10-time champions' third home league loss in a row proved to be Roussey's last, just days after the club's joint presidents gave him two games to save his job.

When Comolli was previously with St Etienne, the club finished sixth in the league and reached the semi-finals of the Coupe de France.

He left the club following a fallout with the Ligue 1 club's directors.

Previously he worked for Arsenal as a European scout for seven years from 1997 played an important role with helping to bring Thierry Henry, Robert Pires and Robin van Persie to the club and took credit for the capture of Kolo Toure and Gael Clichy.

"I had already met Damien four weeks ago, before he left Tottenham, to ask him to think about it," added Caiazzo.

"The fact that he left Tottenham made things easier for me.

"We think that we absolutely need to ensure the club's future with a great sporting director.

"Damien Comolli has proved at Tottenham that he has a lot of experience. It's someone that we know."
